The next step is to sand the gesso with very fine sandpaper.
It should be smooth and shiny like marble.
There must be no scratches or imperfections, otherwise they will be evident during the gilding process. Gold is unforgiving!
Once the sanding process is complete, we move on to the relief decoration with gesso.
First, the drawing is gently transferred onto the gessoed base.
Then you start to create the relief with a thin brush and gesso, until you get the desired thickness.
Lastly, once the relief decoration is complete, it must be delicately sanded with very fine sandpaper.
Considering the minute details, care must be taken not to over-sand the details.
If you make a mistake, you can easily correct it with new gesso where needed to recreate the relief you accidentally removed.
